College Counseling

College counseling services are a natural extension of the test prep process. As the personal relationship with students and their families develops throughout the year, we seamlessly incorporate conversations about college and timelines for the admissions process. My style is less formal as these conversations begin, but becomes highly structured as students finish their junior year.

College consulting services are billed by the hour, allowing families the flexibility to take on as much or as little as they like.

  • Know the timeline - start early!
  • Develop a list of schools
  • Realistic, knowledgeable advice about possible, probable and likely schools
  • Make decisions about testing - are you finished?
  • Visiting and narrowing down choices
  • Essay Writing - what do you want to say and how are you going to say it?
  • Applications - deadlines, forms, and patience!
  • Packaging and presenting yourself
  • Hang in there - learn why you may have to wait until May for your first choice!

Admissions include Harvard, University of Pennsylvania, Duke, NYU, Columbia, University of Richmond, Wake Forest, Elon, Middlebury, Swarthmore, Tufts, University of Vermont, Kenyon, Oberlin, Hamilton, Connecticut College, Boston College, Penn State, University of Pittsburgh, University of British Columbia, University of Michigan, University of Wisconsin, Rochester, Vassar, and more.

KATHERINE!!!

COLGATE 2014!!

I came home from school yesterday with a nicely sized envelope from Colgate congratulating me on my acceptance to the class of 2014--it was actually a life changing moment- I didn't know how to handle it!!! One of the best parts of the entire "getting-in-to-Colgate-moment" was reading the acceptance letter and having a hand written note from the Dean of Admissions, Gary Ross, on the bottom of it.

He wrote:

"We truly enjoyed reviewing your application, Rebecca, but especially liked your essay about your scarf. It was descriptive and very well written and carried a very important message. I know you will bring so much to the Colgate community. Welcome to the class of 2014!"

I am so thrilled! I wanted to thank you so much for all of your help along the way. From SAT's, to ACT's, to essay supplements, to my real essay (which clearly made an impact on those who read my application), I seriously couldn't have handled the college application process without you! You simplified everything for me and constantly gave me the reassurance I needed along the way. You were such a tremendous mentor, and anyone I know who is younger than me or may be struggling with the entire college ordeal I immediately refer to you.

I'm so happy all of the hard work paid off, because I seriously think I was accepted to the perfect school for me!

Thank you again for EVERYTHING Katherine-- once again, I couldn't have done it without you!

Katherine,

I want to echo Caitlin's thanks for your help with the college testing and application process. She felt much more confident going into the SAT & ACT tests after working with you. Your approach helped decrease the pressure she was feeling. In addition, your help in picking a topic to write about for her common app essay and subsequent feedback allowed her to focus and complete that dreaded piece of the application without too much angst. She is very happy about her acceptance at U of Richmond and is now going to go skiing at Squaw Valley and Heavenly in early January with her dad, brother and cousins!

Please feel free to use us as a reference for new clients.

I know that Bridget sent you the good news, but I had to drop a line as well..

It seems like yesterday that we all sat in your office and Bridget had tears in her eyes, overwhelmed and so nervous over this entire process…with your great expertise, compassion and understanding, you not only helped B bring out the best in herself but also kept her off the ledge! You helped us understand that this process is so much more than just “good scores” and “getting in”, it is the growing process, where a kid sees, perhaps for the first time, that they themselves have control over outcomes and realize as young adults, there is a reward for hard work and taking responsibility… Bridget took your advice, “put on her big girl pants” and reached…and the reward is well deserved. Please feel free to use us as reference- I know there are lots of different kinds of kids with different needs, but perhaps the two things that come to mind the most when I think of you is your total and complete respect of Bridget (which gave her so much confidence) and your approachability- we never felt that any question or situation was too dumb to bring up… so important for us newbies!! For this we thank you.

Wake Forest Class of 2011!!! Your help was invaluable and I appreciate every minute you spent reviewing my essays…..If I ever hear a cry of essay distress from one of my friends I will not hesitate to let them know that Katherine Miller is the best in the biz. Thank you so much for your help!

Hi Katherine! I just wanted to let you know that about an hour ago I found out I was accepted to the University of Pennsylvania early decision! Thank you so much for everything you did for me. You were so much more than a tutor, you were an amazing support system.

Senior, Lower Merion

I’m so glad you’re helping her. You have been the most competent “right-on-the-money” help she ever had

Thanks so much for your words…just what the “doctor ordered”! …your support has been awesome.

All I know is that if it wasn’t for you, Hannah is not at Middlebury. From very early on you thought Midd would be a great fit.

In the summer/fall of 2007 you worked with my son Matt on his early decision college application to Wake Forest University. We found your professional guidance and editing expertise to be exceptional. We were equally impressed by the easy and engaging interactions you had with Matt, which greatly eased the stress of the whole process. I am happy to report that he just finished his sophomore year at Wake...is loving every minute, and will be heading off to Salamanca Spain in August for a semester abroad.

We have a second son, CJ, who has just finished his junior year at Conestoga HS and we are hoping that you are available to provide similar consulting help with his college applications.

Parent, Conestoga

Thanks again for all you do. I know it’s a job, but your expertise has such a positive impact on people, and that is the hallmark of a great job…

Katherine, This is awesome. We really appreciate all the encouragement, direction and strategies you've vested in Brian. He really responds to you and it's been so nice for us to know what's going on behind the scenes. We really want it to be his process but he needs nudges now and again-so thanks for that. As you know (and he's our first) it's hard to walk the fine line of letting it be his process versus knowing how much to get involved. Thanks for guiding us all to that end.
